Self Reflection

(1) How do you think you are doing so far in your senior project and why? AE, P, AP, CR, or NC
AE, because I have been working on my service learning extensively. I've also always bring a lot of research and take my time reading it and margin noting every note that I think could help me in the future.
(2) What one thing do you think you have done well on and why?
I think I'm doing well on my service learning because I've been doing it continuously and extensively.
(3) What is one thing you would like to improve on and why?
I would like to improve on my science fair project journal. I think I'm putting a little bit of information in it and Ms. Melogno wants more. I hope to improve it and do well on my science fair component.

Science Fair Proposal

1. If ballerina’s focus at a specific spot while spinning then their balance would not be lost.
2. Dependent: spinning
Independent: balance
Control: ballerina
3. The connection between my experiment and my EQ is; my EQ is what is most important in perfecting the role of a ballerina and my experiment will probably give me one answer. Since spinning and balance is a huge factor in ballet, it will determine one of the factors that ballerina’s need to have in order to be perfect. How do you gain balance? Does spotting help?
4. Equipment: dancers, a focused spot, a timer, paper and pen to write data.
I will perform, grouping three groups, first group random, the second spotting, and the third not spotting. Random meaning, they won’t know that there they should be spotting which are the ones that will go first. I will make them spin for at least two 8 counts constantly. I will record and observe their movement/balance especially in their body and head. Then I will have the other two groups do the same; except the spotting group will know where the focused spot it located. I will do this over again a few times. I will basically examine the anatomical causes of balance vs. dizziness and assess why it is that spotting prevents the latter.
Why do you balance when you spot?
There are tubes in your ear that have a fluid matrix in them these tubes are lined which small bone-like structures called otolinths. The tubes in the ear help people balance when you change position. These structures react to gravity and move the surface of the tube and the fluid which can be turned into an action potential and integrated into motor cortex via neurotransmitter. The brain can send signals back through your cerebellum to control fine muscle coordination as a result of the ear signals. Therefore, me figure out why exactly this will occur.

What I've Learned So Far

1) What have you learned how to do since you started working on your senior project?
I have learned the strengths and training that all ballerinas need to have in order to dance and dance on pointe. I have also learned the reason why I have tendonitis on my ankle and the other different injuries that a dancer can have.

2) Post evidence of this accomplishment. It can be in the form of a picture, video, document, etc..
a picture showing the strengths in my legs and ankle.

3) What research helped you to do this and how?
#7 Ballet Basics
#11 Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 Edition
Article Name: “Dancers and Choreographers”
These two articles gave me information about the strengths and training that a ballerina needs to have in order to dance.

#21, #21B, #21C Foot and Ankle Injuries in Dance
This article helped me understand all the different injuries that dancers may have specifically, ballerinas. It also taught me why I have tendonitis (unique injury to non-dancers) on my ankle. (Common ballerina injury)

Independent Component 1 Plan Approval

1) For my Independent Component, I plan to use my practice hours leading to my recital and also tutor/teach little girl/girls for ballet. I plan to have all 30 hours for the first semester by doing this.

2) I will be practicing my dancing a few hours a week and will get my hours signed off by my parents and or sister. I will also teach/tutor the little girl/girls during the weekend and get the hours signed off by their parents.

3) It relates to my EQ because practicing ballet will hopefully make be better and make me realize what it takes to be a role of a perfect ballerina.

Defining the Essential Question

1. What is most important for perfecting the role of a ballerina?
2. Two confusing words:
> perfecting: ballerina's are always trying to "perfect" their movements. They believe that every single step and movement needs to be perfect in order to be a professional ballerina.
> role: as a role I mean, put your heart and soul into every step and movement. It's like you breath and live for that role. And in order to live and breath ballerina, your goal must be to become a perfect ballerina.
3. Answers:
> Getting all the steps right
> Posture of the body
> Counting the music
4. As of right now my most important source would be, Laura Maruna-Roach. She's been my dance teacher since I started ballet and I think it's great that she chose it as her career. She's also my main source because she's actually had experience in it and still does it.

Presentation Reflection

1. My first interview affected my presentation in the way that I actually had some source to talk about. I presented the things that my interviewee said about what I had asked her. I presented what she said about her perspective about ballet.
2. I think the thing that stood out about my presentation what that I incorporated a lot of art into it. I also let everyone know how much ballet feels to me and why I chose it.
3. The most challenging thing to do was to explain the audience my perspective on ballet. Not everyone knows what ballet actually is and to explain it is even more difficult because you what the audience to know your perspective.

Senior Project Presentation 1

Objective: The students will learn the beginning of ballerina’s life and will understand the definition of ballet in a ballerina’s point of view.

Procedure:
Step 1, Intro: Show the students the picture frame and the pair of pointe shoes, asking them, “What do these mean to you?” (approx. 45 sec.)
Step 2 Inro2: Compare the audience’s view of ballet and the ballerina’s view. Also talk about my interviewee. (approx. 45 sec)
Step 3: Facts about ballet including: the hours of practice (ask students a question), when you need to start training (professional or for fun), and performances. (approx. 45 sec)
Step 4: What does ballet mean to me? (A ballerina’s point of view) (approx. 15 sec)
Step 5: Explain my end goal (approx. 30 sec)
Step 6: Questions including: showing the picture frame and pointe shoes, “Now, what do they mean to you? and “Any questions?” (approx. 45 sec)

Check for Understanding:
I will ask questions at the end including: “Now, what is ballet to you?”

Resources/Materials:
Visual:
A picture frame of a ballerina
A pair of pointe shoes

Interview Check

Questions:

1. Who are you interviewing and why?

2. What additional questions will you ask them (in addition to the 5 we require)

I will be interviewing my dance teacher since she chose dance as her career. Also because she's been my teacher ever since I stared dancing and no one knows my dancing better than her. I would like to know why she chose dance as her career and what made her so interested. I also would like to know her background and her steps to becoming a dancer.

Questions:
1. What are some of the difficulties about this topic?

2. What section do you recommend I focus more on?

3. What does dance mean to you?

4. Would you recommend this as a career? If so, why?

Research

What is your topic? Why? And what do you hope to accomplish after studying this topic all year?

Topic: Ballet Dancing

I chose ballet dancing as my topic because I enjoy learning and dancing ballet. I've always watched and enjoyed ballet shows whether they were on T.V. or live. My parents took my sister and I to live ballet shows such as: the nutcracker. I love dancing on the dance floor to any kind of music you could ask anyone especially my family. I especially love dancing ballet because it makes me forget about the world and moves me into another perfect world. I hope to accomplish perfect dance moves, being good enough so that I could be in the front line, and knowledge about ballet. In order to be in the front line you have to have all the steps perfect, so I hope that I could officially perform everything perfect in the end. As of right now, ballet is a big part in my life but at the end I hope that I will be better in order to appreciate it more.
